Most students choose to self- move, but you will need to find some willing volunteers to help transport all your belongings home- the parents normally come in handy here. If you are not lucky enough to have helpful parents or friends and don’t have your own means of transport you will need to consider booking a removal van (this might also apply if your own Nissan Micra is not up to the job!). Vans can be rented for this purpose. It is always best to hire a slightly bigger van than you think you will need as it saves the stress of having to squash everything in on moving day or making more than one trip.
If you can’t drive or are not confident enough driving a large van you can hire a removal company to help load and drive the van for you. Word of mouth is normally a good way to find a reliable removal company. Local companies will generally be cheaper than nationwide ones but make sure you do your research first. Get a few quotes from different removal companies before making your decision and always find out what the price includes, i.e. if there are any additional fees. Insurance is normally extra but isn’t an optional extra!
The packing is an important, often time consuming job but is worth doing well to avoid breakages and to make it easier to unpack! It’s also a good time to de clutter; get rid of anything you no longer wear or need (might not be a good idea to burn all your folders of work just yet though!). Take any unwanted stuff to the charity shop and make sure you have returned any library books. Don’t buy any perishable foods in the week before moving unless you know you will eat them and it’s a good idea to try and eat up any canned foods as they are heavy and bulky. You might find you don’t need to buy any more food in the weeks before moving!
Try to pack everything into logical, labelled boxes, i.e the kitchen stuff in one box, DVDs in one box and toiletries in another. It may be worth investing in some quality packing boxes, rather than supermarket ones, as these are designed specifically for this purpose and are extra sturdy. These boxes are also easier to stack if you need to store the boxes at home. Many packing box companies do ‘student packs’ or have student deals on.
Pack heavy items into smaller boxes, so they are not too heavy to carry. When loading into the van make sure all heavy boxes are at the bottom and wrap anything delicate in bubblewrap or newspaper before packing. When packing dishes, pack them on their side instead of flat and make sure there is plenty of padding around and between them.
Good Luck!
